Fannie Winston

d. March 3, 2021

There are some people who come into your life that are so alive, so ageless, so wonderful that they seem immortal!  One of these people was Fannie Winston!  She passed away on February 8, 2021, at Dignity Health - St. Rose Dominican Hospital, after a brief illness.

Fannie’s outgoing style and flair will be dearly missed by all of those whose lives she touched.  Having been nurtured by her loving parents, Willie Winston and Sallie Williams Winston, her charismatic personality blossomed early and continued to bloom throughout her lifetime.

Growing up in a small, Northwest Louisiana town was no barrier to her aspiration of success.  Fannie was always a leader, even for her twin brothers, who preceded her in the birth order, and for her younger sister and brother.  Fannie even formed a singing group with her siblings. She named herself lead singer (even though she could not sing a note).

After graduating from high-school, Fannie left Winston Hill, the land on which her childhood home was located, to continue her education at Grambling State University. She successfully completed her B.A. Degree in Elementary Education and began teaching in Louisiana. Because of her outstanding teaching record, she received many prestigious education fellowships from universities throughout the country to further her training in education.  Fannie left Louisiana to continue her teaching career in Las Vegas, Nevada.  After settling there, she taught 2nd grade at Doris French Elementary School, Neil C. Twitchell Elementary School, and Frank Lamping Elementary School.  During this time, she earned her M.A. Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Nevada. Years after her retirement, Fannie was still recognized by former students, co-workers, and old friends.

With all Fannie did in her career, she still found time to pursue other interests.  She was an avid traveler who enjoyed visiting international destinations, interacting with and learning about various cultures.

Fannie met and married her loving husband, Garth, through which she gained an extended family of nieces and nephews.

Excerpts from Fannie’s favorite lessons from the Bible:  1 Corinthians 13

Love is patient.
Love is kind.
Love does not envy.
Love is not boastful.
Love is not arrogant.
Love is not rude.
Love is not self-seeking.
Love is not irritable.
Love does not keep a record of wrongs.

LOVE NEVER ENDS!
