It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Smith, a beloved husband, father, brother, and esteemed educator. Born on July 25, 1932, Walter lived a full and meaningful life before his peaceful passing on October 19, 2025.
Walter is survived by his wife, Norma Smith, to whom he was devotedly married since 1950. He is also survived by his daughter, Shellye Ritsko, son-in-law, John Ritsko, daughter-in-law, Janie Smith, brother, Wallace Smith, sister-in-law, Arlene Smith. His son, Curtis Smith, sadly predeceased him. Walter's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Jared Ritsko, Sarah Bowden, Allison Smith, Barrett Smith, and Aubrey Day, who will miss their grandfather's wisdom and gentle spirit.
Education was a recurring theme in Walter's life. After graduating from Amarillo High School in 1950, he continued his academic journey at West Texas A&M University where he graduated in 1958. His passion for learning transitioned to a passion for teaching and leading, leading to an illustrious career in education. Between 1960 and 1998, Walter served in various administrative positions, including a teacher, a principal, and finally as the Director of Spring Mountain Correctional Institution in Las Vegas, NV. His visionary leadership and dedication led to the design and implementation of the operational program for the School and the Institution's Rehabilitation Program, a testament to Walter's commitment to improving the education system.
A memorial service to honor Walter's life will be held on November 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at 1401 S Rainbow Blvd. All those who knew and loved Walter are invited to attend, to share memories, and to celebrate a life well-lived. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the rich legacy he has left behind.
