Karen M. Joy-Mason passed away at home on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. She had been suffering from a debilitating lung disease for many years.
Karen was born in Boston Massachusetts on July 12, 1957, the daughter of John and Dorothy (Luxton) Joy. In addition to her parents she was pre deceased by her two brothers, Michael and Paul Joy.
After graduating from Quincy High School and attending Northeastern University, Karen moved to Las Vegas in the late 1970s. As a young woman, she worked as a cocktail waitress at various hotels including the Plaza where she met her future husband, James W. Mason in 1984.
Karen assisted her husband for many years with their business, Family Music Centers, until her illness prevented her from continuing. In addition, she had a great love for animals and over the years was personally responsible for rescuing dozens of cats and dogs, many of whom she adopted. Her friends would often comment that when they die, they want to return as one of Karen’s pets because of the pampering and wonderful care they received.
She spent much of her life focused on providing a loving home for her husband and living each day to its fullest. Karen was a force of nature and meeting her for the first time usually left a lasting impression. She was kind but direct. You never had any doubts about her thoughts or how she felt about something.
Many things brought her joy, but she was never happier than anytime she had the chance to spend some time at the ocean.
Karen is survived by her husband, brother and sisters in-law, many nieces and nephews, and her cherished pets. Her beautiful spirit and kind heart will surely be missed by them and the many friends she made over the years.
At Karen’s request, no services are planned. She will be laid to rest in Massachusetts at a future time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Karen’s memory to a pet rescue organization of your choice.
