October 17, 1958 — November 1, 2025

Fruita, Colorado

John Thomas O’Laughlin, age 67, passed away on November 1, 2025, in Henderson, Nevada, at the end of a three-week road trip traveling through the West while visiting his children’s families and exploring national parks. His passing came at the close of a journey that perfectly reflected his life, one full of adventure, family, and joy.

John was born on October 17, 1958, in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, to John and Sally O’Laughlin. He grew up mostly in Colorado, where he developed a lifelong love for the outdoors, baseball, and connecting with people wherever he went.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Colorado Boulder, a master’s degree in Education from the University of New Mexico, and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from Walden University.

While living in Colorado, John met the love of his life, Alison, and the two were married on May 25, 1984, in Salt Lake City, Utah. From that day forward, they were inseparable partners in every adventure. Together they built a life full of love, laughter, and faith, living in Utah, North Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Colorado, New Mexico, and Virginia, before finally settling in Fruita, Colorado.

John’s career path was as dynamic and creative as he was. Before entering the world of advertising, he spent time as a circus juggler, a magician, and even a school bus driver, bringing smiles and laughter wherever he went. He then began a successful career in advertising and marketing for television news stations. Later, after earning his advanced degrees, he transitioned into government training and education, working first with the Air Force base in New Mexico and then with the CIA in Virginia. He often told people he “just trained new hires,” though whether or not that was the whole story will forever remain a family mystery, and it was one he loved keeping alive.

After decades of professional service, John retired in the spring of 2025. He loved everything about retirement! He was especially happy to have more time to travel with Alison, visit his kids, and enjoy the simple, everyday moments he cherished most.

John was the ultimate optimist who was always selfless, kind, and endlessly social. He had a special gift for making others feel seen and valued, whether through a warm conversation or a simple smile to a stranger. He loved baseball, hiking, the colors of autumn, and watching the sunrise and sunset. He played baseball through college and cherished the sport throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife, Alison; his mother, Sally; brothers Chris, Martin, and Mark; and his children: Katey Leatham (Paul; children Jack, Scott, and Avery), Andrew O’Laughlin (Megan; children Emmie, James, and Lia), Craig O’Laughlin (Rylee; children Bri and the late Tommi), and Ryan O’Laughlin (Sarah). He was preceded in death by his brother, Brian, his father, John, and his granddaughter, Tommi.

John’s greatest joy in life was being a husband, dad, and grandpa. His eight grandchildren were his pride and happiness, and he cherished every chance to be part of their lives.

A private celebration of John’s life will be held Friday, November 7, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada, surrounded by family who love him deeply.

John will be remembered for his boundless optimism, his generosity, and his genuine heart. His laughter and kindness will continue to live on in the lives of everyone who knew him.
