Bernard Scott

March 4, 1931 — August 1, 2022

Las Vegas

Bernard Charles Scott lived life to the fullest, evidenced by the fact that everyone was surprised by the passing of this 91-year-old.   He was still driving himself, competing in trivia games at a local restaurant, staying active in Facebook and Linked In, and utilizing many on-line services. His zest for life and love of learning was contagious.

Born to Bernard Joseph and Jane Falcosky Scott during the depression, he worked hard to be successful.  After high school in the Cleveland area, he paid for college at Ohio University through participation in the Air Force ROTC, eventually serving as an intelligence officer during the Korean Conflict.  Upon graduation, he married his sweetheart Ann Metzger, and together they raised four children: Karen, Robert, Susan and Sandra.

Upon leaving the Air Force, he became an accountant for Chrysler Corporation in Detroit.  However, when Karen developed a rare form of muscular dystrophy, both Ann and Bernie decided the Michigan winters would be too hard for her, so Bernie found a job with St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.  His job with St. Vincent’s blossomed into a life-long career in hospital administration.

At that time, most Catholic hospitals preferred to have nuns as head administrators.  Realizing that try as he might, he was never going to fit that mold, Bernie joined Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).  This position required moving from his beloved Florida to El Paso, Texas to become Administrator of Sun Towers Hospital.  After four years, he was able to wrangle a transfer to the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.  He continued rising through the ranks, eventually serving as a Regional Vice President for HCA.  Active professionally, his peers elected him to serve as President of the Hospital Financial Management Association.

After retiring, he spent several years on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica selling real estate and enjoying “Pura Vida” as Costa Ricans describe the beauty and lifestyle of their country.  Eventually, he settled in Las Vegas, living with his daughter Susie for many years. He remained mentally sharp and interested in the world and in others. He was proud of his adult children and adored his grandchildren: Christopher, Timothy, Joshua, Jolie, Elizabeth, Ann Marie, Stephen, John, DJ, and Zach. He always remembered facts from previous conversations and would ask detailed follow-up questions about their activities and pursuits. He now has eleven great grandchildren: Ezra, Lily, Emily, Evelyn, Titus, Eden, Othniel, Henry, Moses, Tabitha, and Alexander.  Preceded in death by both his parents and his sister Eleanor, he remained connected to Eleanor’s children Reggie, Debbie, Paul Joe and Peggy.

Bernie loved all the beauty of creation but especially the ocean.  He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
